Rajshahi
Rajshahi,
which, during the medieval times, was called "Rampur
Boalia" or "Beuleah", is situated in
the north-west part of Bangladesh. Prior to the partition
Rajshahi was a part of the Pundru region and is now
one of the 6 metropolitan cities of the country. Rajshahi
which, according to the year 2006 survey of the London
School of Economics, is 'the happiest city of the world',
has a population of over 700,000. The majority of the
population is Muslims, though a number of people of
other religions, including Hindus, Buddhists and Christians
also live here.
Rajshahi,
the 'education city', is also one of the major centers
of education in Bangladesh, where students from all
over the country flock together for education. Some
of its most well known education centers include Rajshahi
University, Rajshahi Medical College, Rajshahi University
of Enignieering and Technology, Rajshahi College, etc.
This
city, being one of the developing cites of the country,
has a number of industries, which provide products to
a large number of people. Among these, the most notable
industries include the industries based on mango produce,
the sugar mills and the jute mills. Rajshahi is particularly
well known all over the world for its Rajshahi silk,
and related products. In fact, Rajshahi is ofen refered
to a the silk city, because the silk produces here are
sold at very cheap rates.
Located
near some of the anicient capital cities of the west
bengal, (oncluding Piundra and Lokhonaboti or Lakhnoiti
), Rajshahi is well known for being the hometown of
many well known people including Amir Ali Miah, M.L.A
, Muhammad Enamul Hoque, A. H. M. Kamaruzzaman Hena,
Bondey Ali Miah, Ramaprasad Chanda, etc. Rajshahi being
one of cites that was a centre of attention during the
1971 liberation war, also has the country's largest
mass grave.
The
'happiest city of the world,'Rajshahi, is a popular
tourist destination, where people from all over the
world come to see its acheological sites. For example
Barakuthi, continues to be a major tourist attraction
for its cemetery, that has groves, belonging to the
nineteenth century. Other major areas include Sapura,
the Central Park and Zoo, the Bara Kuthi (16th century
Dutch establishment), Varendra Research Museum, Shona
Dighi (Golden Pond), Shrine of Hazrat Shah Mokhdum (Rh),
the temple of king Khangsa Narayan, etc.
The
whether of Rajshahi is usually humid, marked with a
high temperature (especially starting from March till
mid July). However, during the winter months the climate
is pleasant, and this is ideally the best time for touring
this city.
This
city, with its 377.09 square km area faces no problem
of transportation since it is well connected through
roads and rail. The Shah Makhdum Airport (named after
the well known Islamic preacher), situated close to
the city is helps in connecting this city with the rest
of the world. also, he city has the facilitates water
transportation, in fact its river beaches attract people
from al over the world. The most noteworthy among these
are the beaches on the river Padma, where rich mango
orchards are found. Rajshahi is also known for growing
sugarcanes, watermelons, litchis, etc.
