Delhi
Delhi
is the capital of India. It has been the seat of power since historical
times. It is situated on the banks of the river Yamuna and has a
massive population of 13 million. The city of Delhi has 3 coterminous
census towns attached with it; they are New Delhi, built by the
British, Delhi Cantonment and Delhi built by the Mughals. There
are 214 villages too attached to it. Delhi is an ancient city and
there were civilisations present here more than 200 years ago too.
Delhi
has an extreme type of climate. It is very hot in summers and cold
in winters. Summers in Delhi are hot, very hot. Since it is situated
in the plains, hot dry wind blows and is not uncommon for people
to be fatally attacked by loo, the hot dry wind. During
afternoons the roads are deserted and one must be extra careful
before venturing out. During winter it is cold, up to -6 degrees
C or 30.9 degrees F and there is heavy fog, which lead to the most
common problem of flight disruptions.
Like
all other major metropolitan cities of the world, Delhi also has
rapid urbanisation problems of traffic snarls, pollution and shortage
of resources like water and power.
Gurgaon,
Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad are the four satellite cities lying
outside Delhi. Delhi is a union territory and thus has its own government.
The supreme court of India is also located in Delhi; Delhis
commercial hub is the Connaught Place. There are innumerable posh
tall buildings here and the traditional as well as the plush market
both are situated here. It is an important business centre in the
entire central Asia. The Laxmi Narayan temple in Delhi is an important
must visit because of its grandeur and splendour.
The
crowd is cosmopolitan and you find people of all communities living
harmoniously together. The largest mosque in India is the Jama Masjid
mosque which is situated here. Rajghat, Akshardham, India gate,
Purana Quila, a 16th century fort Chandni Chowk is 3 centuries old
market.
Since
Delhi is the capital of India, it is the seat of power and the Parliament
is the house of power. The President of India lives in The Rashtrapati
Bhavan, the elegant structure built by the British. The lawns of
Rashtrapati Bhavan are lush green and beautiful. The Lutiyan garden
is another great expanse of greenery in the heart if the city, aptly
called the lungs of the city. The North Block, which is situated
in Raisina Hills, is the house of the finance and the home ministry.
Even
today, the rich archaeological structure, with its influence of
the different rulers and era, create a sense of awe in the mind
and heart of the visitor. The majestic Red Fort, the modern Lotus
temple, the worlds tallest brick minaret, the Qutab Minar, they
all evoke a feeling of respect for this city.
