Afghan government fails to help bombed village

In August, US airstrikes in Herat province drew harsh criticism from the Afghan government and the UN. They said 90 civilians had been killed. The US said 30 civilians died. President Hamid Karzai visited the area; promising justice and assistance.

Decades of war in Afghanistan have left the health system in ruins, and the civilan population at severe risk by disease and injury. The situation is especially grave for pregnant women. Afghanistan has some of the highest maternity and infant mortality rates in the world.

Mullah Mohamad Rasul, a Taliban leader who survived the US military operation in Afghanistan in 2001, meets Al Jazeera in the tribal regions between Afghanistan and Pakistan. He says that the Taliban are getting ready for a new battle, and that boosting US forces in Afghanistan will only lead to more bloodshed.
